Freedom House

A Step-Down Sober Living Home in Asheville for Guys Ready to Live on Their Own Terms

No need to scroll Roomster and Roomi looking for sober roommates.

Freedom House is a ready-made community of guys who’ve fought the same battles as you.

Freedom House is the step-down home at Steps to Peace and Purpose. It’s for clients who have completed the 12 steps and are starting to plan for independent living. Clients live at Freedom House until a suitable sober roommate situation is found for the next step on their own.

Housemates Who Understand The Work You’ve Done

The last thing any newly sober guy wants is to end up living with roommates who will let all their hard work of getting sober go to waste. At Freedom House, you’ll have housemates who’ve fought the same battles and are in your corner.

It’s a community of young sober men who are all working on themselves and taking real steps to build full lives again with jobs, school, and family back in the picture.

Who can Live Here?

Freedom House is open to men who did their sobriety work at Peace and Purpose or who are coming in from another program.

Moving into Freedom House isn’t automatic and it isn’t on a fixed calendar. It’s a judgment call made by the professional staff at Steps to Peace and Purpose, based on where each client actually is in his recovery.

A Real House

in a Real Neighborhood in West Asheville

Freedom House sits in West Asheville, close to a bus line, with transportation available for anyone who needs it. Up to ten guys live here at a time, two to a room, with weekly family meals that keep the house feeling like a house and not an institution.

Random drug testing is part of life here, with zero tolerance for anything that puts sobriety at risk, including gas station highs, Kratom, 7OH, and THC gummies. The approach is holistic, body, mind, and spirit, with trainers, yoga, and meditation built into the week.

What sets Freedom House apart from other step-down options in the area is that it carries the full Peace and Purpose support system with it, so clients get more than a room and a curfew.

Freedom House offers A Full Schedule, Not Just a Bed

Like our two full-support recovery houses, Freedom House provides transportation and meaningful weekly programming, including:

  • A personal trainer

  • Yoga

  • Access to a fully equipped wood shop

  • Access to a mechanic garage

  • A weekly bonfire recovery meeting, with dinner provided

  • Transportation and support getting connected within the Asheville recovery community

Led By House Managers Who’ve Lived It

Sober living should offer more than a bed and a set of rules. It should offer opportunities, experienced leadership, real community, accountability, and a pathway toward independence, and at Freedom House it does.

Chris Reemes is one of the house managers at Freedom House. He’s spent years doing hands-on recovery work and brings a practical, grounded approach, built on real solutions and coping strategies that actually hold up over time. He connects with guys because he's done the work himself, and his focus at Freedom House is helping young men build recovery that lasts.

Experience matters here. Every house manager has a minimum of 18 months of lived recovery. Residents are never placed in house-manager positions or asked to supervise their peers.

What Parents See Happen Next

One parent, whose son moved into the step-down program after his time in full support, said it’s helped him build toward independent living while still having support in place: “They also offer a program helping the guys settle into their independent lives when they are ready to be on their own.” She credited the same team with staying involved in her son’s individual progress even at this step-down stage.

More Independence, Without Losing the Structure That Got You Here

Recovery at Freedom House is about more than having a place to live. It's about building a life worth staying sober for. Freedom House offers greater independence while still holding onto structure, accountability, community, and support.

“The house managers really care about these guys and help them with their individual program. It definitely feels like a family, not a facility. I can’t recommend this place enough!”
